You started a small T shirt company where you print great designs for T shirts on your printer, press them on shirts you buy at a local discount store, then sell them on-line.  You have decided to start a formalised business.  You have acquired a business partner who is bringing a large amount of capital to your business.  Explain how you will scale your business.  Be specific, where will you locate? What type of machinery will you use? Any management strategies will you use?

 watch 'The Story of Stuff"

The film shows problems with our current consumer culture but also points out some key marketing terms.

1. What is planned obsolescence?
2. What is perceived obsolescence?
3. What are your feelings on this 'film'? Is the world in 'crisis', should we change?
4. Everyday, people are becoming (a little) more aware of how their actions affect the environment and therefore themselves. Companies are trying to become (or a least appear) more environmentally responsible. This is part of what is sometimes called the 'Green Revolutions'. Write a paragraph about what marketing opportunities are being created by the Green Revolution for existing businesses, new businesses, and marketers. Feel free to use the internet as a resource.

1. What is your entrepreneurs name and what is the business/product that they are famous for.
2. Briefly explain some of their major successes.
3. Have they had any failures or troubles, if so, do you think that it hurt them or helped them in the end? Explain.
4. In a paragraph explain how this person has managed to achieve success, (you may wish to talk about their ideas, work ethic, ability to compete etc.)

Course Description
In this course you will be introduced to the fundamentals of business.  This will include a brief overview of what a business is, different types of ownership and organizational structures as well as what makes a business successful or not.   We will be looking into what makes a successful Entrepreneur and what Marketers do.  We will also be covering a brief overview of economic theory and how it relates to business as well as accounting and finance.

    • The number one rule is to be respectful during class.
    • A major component of this course is technology, the more you respect the equipment, the better equipment the school will get.  No Food or Drinks please.
  2. Arrive on time and be prepared to work, just like in a job, continued lates will have a negative impact.
  3. Participate fully and positively.
    • Working in business requires that you be able to work both independently and with others.
  4. Always put in your best effort!
    • The main reason that people fail this course is because of lack of effort.
    • If you are absent, it is YOUR responsibility to make up all missed work.  Assignments will be available on-line so you will be able to see what you have missed and email the teacher if needed.

20% - In-class work (assignment, homework completion)
20% - Tests and Quizzes (this course will have several tests with many quizzes)
40% - Projects (the KEY focus of this course)
